Praying with New Testament Letters 3/3, St John- God is love

by Sr. Maria Jose

Passages:

“Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God.  Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.  And God showed his love for us by sending his only Son into the world, so that we might have life through him. This is what love is: it is not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the means by which our sins are forgiven.” ~ 1 Jn 4:7-10

“Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” ~ Jn 13:34

“See how much the Father has loved us! His love is so great that we are called God's children—and so, in fact, we are. This is why the world does not know us: it has not known God. My dear friends, we are now God's children, but it is not yet clear what we shall become.” ~1 Jn 3:1-2

“There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear. So then, love has not been made perfect in anyone who is afraid, because fear has to do with punishment.

We love because God first loved us.  If we say we love God, but hate others, we are liars. For we cannot love God, whom we have not seen, if we do not love others, whom we have seen.  The command that Christ has given us is this: Whoever loves God must also love others.”  1 Jn 4:18-21

Summary

  • God’s love for us is shown by sharing His life with us as His children.

  • His ultimate gift and greatest proof of His love is Jesus, who guides us toward the path to fullness of life.

  • To respond to God’s love and live fully, we should love one another as Jesus loved us.

Reflections:

  1. Being loved by God, how can I live a life of love?
