Praying with the Psalms II 2/5: Happy indeed is the one who trusts

by Maureen Tan

Passages:

…. It is trust that brings us to love and thus sets us free from fear. It is trust that helps us to stop looking to ourselves and enables us to put into God’s hands what he alone can accomplish….

Let us ask, then, for such trust as a free and precious gift of grace, so that the paths of the Gospel may open up in our lives.
(Pope Francis, pt 45, C’est la Confiance)

Happy indeed is the man
Who follows not the counsel of the wicked;
Nor lingers in the way of sinners
Nor sits in the company of scorners,
But whose delight is the law of the Lord
and ponders his law day and night.

He is like a tree that is planted
Beside the flowing waters,
That yields its fruit in due season
And whose leaves shall never fade;
And all that he does shall prosper
(Psalm 1: 1-3)

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the Lord. He is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream; It fears not the heat when it comes, its leaves stay green.
(Jer 17: 7-8)

Reflections:

  1. What is God’s message to me today?

  2. How am I invited to live like the “tree that is planted besides the waters”? In what area of my life am I asked to live out trust in God?
